Gerald Wakins was elected to the Paducah Board of Commissioners as Commissioner in November 2018. He also served three terms as Commissioner from 2007 through 2012. From 2013 through 2018, Watkins served three terms as 3rd District State Representative. Watkins also served the community on the Site Based Decision Making Council for a local high school from 2010 to 2011.
Commissioner Watkins was a Professor of Political Science at West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) from 1990 until December 2018. He was honored to be voted Teacher of the Year four times by the 7000+ student body at WKCTC. In addition to his employment as a professor, Commissioner Watkins was a small business owner for 19 years of Watkins Karate.
Watkins earned an Associate's Degree from Paducah Community College, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Murray State University, and a M.B.A. plus 24 graduate hours above the master’s degree from Murray State University. He was inducted into the Paducah Tilghman High School Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2016, Watkins received the W.C. Young Award by the Western Kentucky AFL-CIO Area Council.
Watkins is a member of Gideons International, and since 1988, he has been a member of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the Paducah Downtown Lions Club for 22 years.
In serving as City Commissioner, Watkins is a member of the Commissioners of Water Works.
