The Paducah Parks and Recreation Department and the Veterans Day Planning Committee invite the public to attend the Veterans Day Parade Opening Ceremony at 10:15 a.m. at the Korean War Monument located on the 6th Street side of Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza.
The winners of the Veterans Day Essay contest organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution will be recognized. The Concord Elementary School Singsations will sing the National Anthem and a medley of patriotic music. James Cruickshank will play the bagpipes.
The opening ceremony includes the recognition of 2017 Distinguished Veteran Walter Eugene Lowrey who will serve as the parade’s grand marshal. The ceremony also includes the presentation of the 2017 Patriot Award to Cynthia Stevenson Byrd. The Patriot Award honors a non-veteran who dedicates his or her time to serving veterans and veteran causes in this community.
In addition to the parade and opening ceremony, the Distinguished Veteran and Patriot Award recipients will be honored at a Celebration Luncheon at the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) location in Paducah on Thursday, November 9 at 2 p.m. Furthermore, everyone is invited to attend the Veterans Day Fish Fry at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) location at noon on Saturday, November 11.
The annual Paducah Veterans Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m. at 6th and Washington Streets on Friday, November 10. It will travel along Washington Street until it turns right on Walter Jetton Boulevard. It will then turn right on Broadway and head toward the riverfront. At 2nd Street it will turn left and disband in the parking lot adjacent to the Farmers' Market. The WKCTC Television Production Department will record the parade (weather-permitting), set it to music, and televise it at a later time on Government 11 and Paducah-2 (for Comcast subscribers).
