All persons selected as new Paducah Police Officers attend the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training Academy in Richmond for Police Basic Training. This 19-week program provides approximately 920 hours of instruction. Recruits undergo firearms training, defensive tactics training and defensive driving training, study the state's penal code, learn report writing skills and investigative techniques, as well as many other facets of police work. Recruits are trained as a Certified Breath Test Operator and pick up a little Spanish. While an academy cadet, each recruit is considered to be a City of Paducah probationary employee and will be paid bi-weekly. However, successful completion of the police academy is a condition of continued employment. Upon graduation, police officer recruits enter the 15-week Police Training Officer Program.
