As we enter 2018, there are many great things happening at Paducah Parks & Recreation. Every day there are free activities to partake in such as walking or biking the Greenway Trail, taking the family to a playground, going disc golfing at Stuart Nelson Park, or taking pictures of the beautiful scenery along the Ohio River at Schultz Park. When you take advantage of any of these activities or one of the many great programs listed in this newsletter below, please share your experience on social media by using #alwayssomethingtodo or tagging Paducah Parks when posting.
Paducah Parks & Recreation is looking forward to having a phenomenal year in 2018, and we hope you find that there is always something to do while you’re in Paducah.
How to Register for Paducah Parks & Recreation Programs
There are three ways to register for programs and activities.
In Office: Stop by the Paducah Parks & Recreation Office at 1400 HC Mathis Drive and register with cash, check, or debit/credit card.
Paducah Recreation Center
Located at 1527 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. For more info on the facility and hours of operations visit the Paducah Recreation Center page. You can now purchase your 2018 membership by visiting the PRC. Memberships cost $20 for either an individual or the entire family (a family consists of parent/guardians and their children), Classes and activities included in the $20 membership at no extra cost include Open Gym, Walking Club, Basketball Open Gym, Volleyball Open Gym, Futsal Open Gym, and more. Members will have to purchase an additional $10 activity punch pass for 20 visits to Chair Yoga, Chair Chi Yoga, Mat Yoga, Funky Fitness, Mid-East Dance, Sculpt and Tone, and other select classes. You can also pay as you go at the rate of $1 for one class.
All users must have a 2018 Membership, which expire on December 31, 2018. Check out the November Calendar to see what programs and activities are being offered this month.
REC Way Basketball
Paducah Parks & Recreation is proud to announce the new REC Way Basketball league for boys and girls in the community. REC Way Basketball is a non-competitive basketball league for boys and girls from PreK - 5th Grade. The goals of REC Way Basketball is to teach kids the basic fundamentals, skills, and rules of basketball.
Since the first clinic is completed, the registration fee has beend dropped to $65 per child, and a 10% off multi-child discount is available. Coaches are volunteers so we ask all parents to conisder helping to coach. The registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, November 27. The registration fee includes four clinics on November 13 & 27, and December 4 & 11. Also there will be weekly practices beginning in mid-December and games in January and February.
The 2018 City of Paducah Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, December 1 in downtown Paducah. The parade begins at 5 p.m. The theme of the 2018 Christmas Parade is A Comic Book Christmas. Parade applications are being accepted now at the Paducah Parks & Recreation office at 1400 H.C. Mathis Drive. The deadline to enter the parade is November 6. Late entries will incur a $25 penalty fee. Entries will not be accepted after Tuesday, November 13.
The parade begins at 5 p.m. at 14th and Broadway and travels down Broadway until it turns left at 2nd Street. The parade will then travel down second until it reaches Monroe where it will disband.
Candy Cane Hunt
The annual Candy Cane Hunt brought to you by Paducah Parks & Recreation and the Yeiser Art Center will be held Saturday, December 1, 2018 on the front lawn of the Carson Center. The entire event is FREE! The children will be divided into different age groups as they race to collect the more than 2,400 candy canes. There will be three hunts for different age groups: 3 and under at 12:45 p.m., 4 to 6 at 1:00 p.m., and 7 to 10 at 1:15 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for finding special candy canes. This year's candy canes will be provided by Banterra Bank.
Kids can also take part in the Yeiser Art Center coloring contest anytime from 12:00 - 2:00pm. They can color their sheet on site or take it home and drop it back off at the Yeiser before Thursday December 6. Prizes will be given out to winners for the age groups of 0-3, 4-6, and 7-10.
Christmas Cards in the Park
In addition to the Christmas in the Park light display sponsored by Paducah Power System, organizations in Paducah and McCracken County can place replicas of large greeting cards in Noble Park. The Christmas Cards in the Park tradition involves the placement of brightly decorated greeting cards, no larger than 4 feet wide by 8 feet high. The cards should be designed to be displayed at the 8 feet high and 4 feet wide position. The Parks & Recreation Department will accept the cards from October 15 through November 15. Only 25 spaces are available. Once 25 cards are received, no additional cards will be accepted.
Holiday Farmers' Market
The Paducah Homegrown Holiday Farmer's Market will be held at Paducah Middle School on Saturday December 8 from 9:00am - 2:00pm. Many of your favorite Farmers' Market vendors will be on site, selling fantastic local, homegrown goods for the holiday season or last minute Christmas gifts. Also come have your little one get their picture taken on Santa's lap!
