Date of release: November 25, 2019
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, historic downtown Paducah and LowerTown will be bustling with holiday shoppers and festivities. On November 30, enjoy the Dickens of a Christmas, Small Business Saturday event organized by Paducah Main Street, a division of the Paducah Planning Department.
Neighborhood Project Planner Melanie Reason says, “Dickens of a Christmas is a well-loved tradition in Paducah that supports our business community. Our local merchants rely on it to initiate the holiday shopping season.”
Beginning at 10 a.m., downtown Paducah will be transformed into a Dickens village with free Victorian carriage rides, musicians, carolers, and characters in costume. At that time, Santa will make a grand entrance on Broadway by riding a carriage to the gazebo. He’ll be there for the event to hear Christmas wishes. Enjoy free hot chocolate, wassail, and s'mores at the fire pit near the gazebo. Paducah Area Transit will provide a free Jolly Trolley around downtown and LowerTown. Hop aboard and enjoy holiday music and entertainment while shopping between destinations. Many of the stores and restaurants will have special sales, activities, and giveaways. Plus, a new element this year is a community tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. on the lawn of the Carson Center.
Paducah Main Street Director Katie Axt says, “I encourage everyone to come to the Dickens of a Christmas event to explore downtown and LowerTown. We have nine new businesses that have opened since last year with 75 merchants participating in this fun holiday tradition.
Axt adds, “Paducah Main Street is here to support, grow, and maintain local business. These small businesses are critical to the community and critical to our economy. By shopping local, more of your dollars will stay local which allows that money to circulate within the community. This day is about celebrating the businesses and building a stronger sense of community.”
This is the sixth year for the City to host Dickens of a Christmas. The primary sponsor for this year’s event Computer Services, Inc. (CSI).
Small Business Saturday is dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The Dickens of a Christmas is an action tied to Our Growth and the Performance Area, Empower Upward Mobility, as outlined in Paducah’s Strategic Plan. The outcome for Action Item E-3 is to promote occupancy in all downtown buildings. To learn more about the Strategic Plan, visit www.ourpaducah.us.
