An observant motel clerk may have saved merchants some holiday woe after realizing that a guest had passed counterfeit cash Thursday night.
Paducah police Officer Cody Santel was called at 8:31 p.m. to the Comfort Inn, 5135 Cairo Road, in reference to a complaint of counterfeit cash. Officers were directed to a particular guest room and there located Bradley L. Peters and Cadie Spears.
The couple agreed to allow officers to search the room and their persons. Officers found counterfeit $20 and $50 bills, a printer, printer cartridges, numerous sheets of paper, full sheets of paper with counterfeit currency printed on them, and a paper cutter. Officers also located a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Det. Blake Quinn was notified. He said Peters admitted using the equipment in the room to print counterfeit U.S. currency and using the fake money to make purchases in Paducah and in Southern Illinois.
Spears confessed that she knew Peters was making counterfeit money, and that she had some in her possession. She also claimed ownership of the marijuana and drug paraphernalia. She and Peters were booked into McCracken County Regional Jail.
Merchants are reminded to be especially cautious about counterfeit cash during the holiday season. If you believe your business has received counterfeit cash, please call the Paducah Police Department at 270-444-8550.
