West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) is the recipient of six awards from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR). One of the awards is for the Paducah Main Street 2014 Small Business Saturday commercial. The 30-second commercial, which promoted the shopping and activities held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in downtown Paducah, received a Gold Medallion Award from NCMPR, the highest award in the College Video Program category. The other five awards were related to programs specific to the college.
Downtown Development Specialist/Paducah Main Street Director Melinda Winchester says, “Every business knows that to attract customers, a variety of marketing techniques need to be implemented. The Small Business Saturday commercial from 2014 was special to me since it featured Paducah’s downtown businesses and their owners. The commercial captured their joy and dedication to Paducah’s downtown. Every second was a beautiful combination of music, words, and imagery.”
The City of Paducah contracts with WKCTC to produce programs and commercials for Government 11 that inform the public about city projects and events. In addition to televising the City Commission and Planning Commission meetings, WKCTC’s television department works with the City to produce commercials and programs including Paducah View, City Profile, and Your City at Work. Paducah Public Information Officer Pam Spencer produces and hosts many of the programs. Spencer says, “The City uses a variety of methods to inform the public about city projects and events including the website, news releases, and social media. However, we all know the power of the sounds and images associated with video. I value the creativity and professionalism of the WKCTC Television Department. We have a great partnership in keeping citizens informed.”
The Medallion Awards is an annual awards celebration honoring the marketing and communication efforts of community college marketing and public relations professionals. The Medallion Awards ceremony was part of the NCMPR District 2 conference held in October in Biloxi, Mississippi. District 2 is comprised of community colleges in 11 southeastern states along with the Bahamas and Bermuda.
