Suspect: Benjamin L. Comer, 26, of the 2800 block of Oaks Road, Paducah, charged in warrants with first-degree robbery and first-degree fleeing or evading police
Paducah police are searching for a man charged with trying to steal more than $1,200 in merchandise from a local store, and pulling a gun on another man who tried to stop him.
Police were called at 12:14 a.m. today to Wal-Mart Supercenter on Paducah’s south side. A customer service manager told officers she saw a man exit the store with two shopping carts full of merchandise, without paying for the items. She said she followed him and asked him to stop, but he cursed her and continued into the parking lot.
A 50-year-old customer saw what was happening and followed the man into the parking lot, trying to stop him. The customer said the man put some of the merchandise into a car, then pulled a pistol from the floorboard of the car and pointed it at him. The man then got into the car and fled.
Officer Cody Santel located the car traveling north on North 8th Street and he and Officer Will Gilbert attempted to stop it. The car fled across the Brookport Bridge into Illinois, reports said. The car later was located by Illinois authorities in a ditch.
Officers recognized the vehicle as one driven previously by Benjamin L. Comer, and identified him as the man pictured in Wal-Mart’s surveillance video of the incident. Warrants were obtained charging Comer with first-degree robbery and first-degree fleeing or evading police.
Anyone with information about Comer’s whereabouts is asked to call the Paducah Police Department at 270/444-8550 or Crime Stoppers at 443-TELL. Tipsters also may access the Online Tip Form.
Comer should be considered armed, and anyone recognizing him should not approach him, but call police.
