Date of release: June 1, 2017
The third annual Meet the Artists, A Celebration of Art & Community will be Thursday, June 15 from 4:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Paducah City Hall located at 300 South 5th Street. This is a free event.
Meet the Artists is an opportunity for the public to personally meet a wide variety of Paducah artists, artisans, designers, and entrepreneurs who continue to strengthen our region as a creative hub. The spirit of community is visually evident with more than 40 artists and arts agencies from around the region coming together to celebrate art and architecture and showcase their talents. Individual artists and art groups including the Paducah Arts Alliance, Yeiser Art Center, Bricolage Art Collective, Art Guild of Paducah, and PAPA Gallery will be in attendance.
Downtown Development Specialist/Paducah Main Street Director Melinda Winchester says, “Paducah is a hub of creativity and an artistic destination. This event is a unique opportunity to see hands-on demonstrations and engage with our local artists. Providing opportunities like this for the public and artists to come together helps promote community spirit and foster a broader understanding of the arts.”
Each year, a special location is chosen to host the event. Last year, the event was held at the newly completed Paducah School of Art & Design with the 2015 event held at the historic Paducah Coca-Cola Plant. This year, Meet the Artists will be held in Paducah’s City Hall.
On December 12, 2016, the Kentucky Historic Preservation Board approved the Paducah City Hall building for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The City is awaiting the final notification from the National Park Service regarding this prominent designation.
Winchester says, “Celebrating both Meet the Artists and the historic significance of our City Hall is a perfect collaboration. Designed by world famous architect, Edward Durrell Stone, the building epitomizes the New Formalism Design from an architect who historically continued to defy the methods of traditional Modernism and its principles. It is an architectural gem for Paducah and follows Stone’s philosophy that each commission should be unique to its circumstances but result in the creation of a work of art. Hosting the event within its artistic walls seems to be the perfect fit.”
The sponsors and partners for Meet the Artists are Paducah Main Street (a division of the City of Paducah Planning Department) and Paducah Economic Development.
