Halloween Safety Reminders for Trick-or-Treaters and Drivers

Date of Release:
October 22, 2026

Halloween is approaching, and the City of Paducah wants residents to have a safe evening trick-or-treating. The City does not establish official trick-or-treat hours; however, the highest number of trick-or-treaters is expected between 5 and 8 p.m. on October 31.

Safety Reminders for Trick-or-Treaters

  • Select costumes that are reflective, fit properly, and do not pose tripping hazards.
  • Make sure that costume accessories are short, soft, and flexible.
  • Visit homes in familiar neighborhoods with their front porch lights on.
  • Never enter someone’s home or accept a ride from a stranger.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions, including cellphones. Watch for traffic, and never assume vehicles will stop since motorists may have difficulty seeing a trick-or-treater. When possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.
  • Do not approach or pet animals.
  • Carry a flashlight.

Safety Reminders for Drivers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers the following reminders for drivers.

  • Be alert for trick-or-treaters and other pedestrians.
  • Slow down and scan the road. Slower speeds save lives.
  • Watch for children in unexpected places. Young trick-or-treaters may be unaware of traffic and could dart into the street.
  • Contact law enforcement if a driver is suspected to be impaired.

Help Keep Trick-or-Treaters Safe When Visiting

Help trick-or-treaters stay safe as they visit homes by turning on outdoor lights, removing tripping hazards such as garden hoses, toys, and lawn decorations, sweeping leaves away from sidewalks and porches, and securing pets.

Jefferson Street Neighborhood Halloween Event

The Jefferson Street Neighborhood plans to hold its annual Halloween event on October 31 from 5:30 until 8 p.m.

During the event, Jefferson Street will be closed to vehicles from 17th Street to 28th Street with cross traffic permitted on 21st Street. Roadways and alleys that exit onto Jefferson will close at approximately 5 p.m.

Participating residents will have their porch light on to welcome trick-or-treaters.
